Show the sooner the better Gov. Calvin L. Rampton is to be commended for l setting up an immediate date for a special session of the j Utah Legislature to do a job they should have done dur-! dur-! ing the recent 60 day regular session. The session, tentatively scheduled for May, will deal ; particularly with the matter of reapportionment, and though the end result might mean less representation for the rural parts of Utah, it is a job that cannot be avoided. Federal courts have been pressing for prompt reapportionment reap-portionment following each 10-year census based on the "one man one vote" principal. If the job is not done by the Legislature, then it will be done by the courts and the end result might be a lot more distasteful than Legislators could imagine. The job of apportioning itself is one that belongs to the Legislature, and should not be left to another branch of government. A bi-partisan committee of Legislators has been appointed ap-pointed to come up with a recommendation. We hope they get their work done promptly, so that the special session in May can quickly deal with the job they ignored ig-nored in March. |
