Show . community u ifH comments... For approximately the last 30 years Post 54 of the American Legion and the Auxiliary has been participating in the Boys State and Girls State program. Each year they have had the support of local businessmen and sent an average of ten students to the week-long workshop to study operations of our government from the local to national levels. For this activity, the girls go to Southern Utah State campus at Cedar City and the boys travel to Utah State University at Logan. Now a group of militant women righters have organized themselves and argue that we cannot have separate governments for men and women. They say that the Legion and Auxiliary State programs are In violation of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972. Why? Because they discriminate against citizens on the basis of sex. They accuse violation because the schools where they meet have accepted government monies and, therefore, cannot be a place where separate sessions can be held. So now it is necessary to address the Congress to write American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State into the 1972 Educational Amendments Act as exemptions or the programs will be lost. It's a rediculous and sad state of affairs. What about the rights of the kids who not only enjoy, but benefit from Boys and Girls State? -sjt- Friends of the Earth representatives are presenting a slide show and program In Moab this weekend, according to a news release carried elsewhere in this issue. The show, about the much talked about Kaiparowits and related projects, will open a discussion on "massive industrial development planned for southern Utah. ..which threatens to transform natural beauty into an industrial wasteland." The entire program is aimed at developing the theme of outside exploitation of Utah's resources. It's interesting to note that the show, produced through a San Francisco group, Is scheduled through a Denver organization. |
