(T-I Staff Photo by Loraine Hofer) Lucky Couple Crawls from Car After Plunge Over the Edae at Dead Horse Point A couple from Japan, who are currently living in the San Francisco, Calif, area escaped es-caped serious injury Tucs- day afternoon when their car left the pavement on the road to Dead Horse Point State Park and plunged 60 feet over an embankment. The car, a 1971 Chevrolet, was completely demolished in the accident. The young couple, ages 35 and 31, escaped escap-ed with only minor injuries. The driver of the car loft tho pavement on the right side of the road about half a mile north of the visitor center. He overcorrected and traveled off the loft side of the road hitting a tree and then the car traveled about 60 feet over the edge of the cliff. It rolled over one-quarter turn, coming to rest on the driver's side near tho edge of an 800 foot drop. A visitor at Dead Horse Point saw the car go off the cliff and park rangers were on the scene almost immediately. immed-iately. They secured the car, which was teetering near the edge of the cliff, with a chain hooked to a truck on top of the mesa. The occupants occu-pants of the car were then removed from the auto with the aid of a ladder. Both were taken to Allen Mamorial Hospital where the man was treated and released. releas-ed. His wife was kept for observation. |
