Show Ski Study Contractors Plan Visit to Moab Director of Envirocon, Walter Wal-ter G. Smith and Ray Kingston Kings-ton and Jack Smith of Entel-iki, Entel-iki, planning consultants and study teams doing the feasibility feasi-bility study on the possibilities possibil-ities of constructing a ski area on the LaSal Mountains, will be in Moab within the next two weeks relative to the wind-up of the feasibility study. They will be meeting with the subcommittee of the Grand County Economic Development De-velopment Committee which is dealing with the ski area ,Study, and based on data gathered during the past year will be making plans on which way to proceed with efforts to attract a developer for construction of the ski area, or scrapping the idea entirely. Snow measurements on the LaSal Mountains during February Feb-ruary have been somewhat discouraging, Mr. Smith said. However, he noted that even though no new snow was recorded re-corded in the Beaver Creek drainage, most of that which was on the ground earlier in the year has remained even with the exceptionally warm spring. Mr. Smith did s.tate, however, that traditionally, according to all past records, February is one of the wettest wet-test months of the year and had the mountains received even a normal amount of precipitation there would still be an adequate amount of snow. Other ski areas in this section of the country are also suffering from - lack of snow, he noted, and many of them have already closed. Also involved in the study is the possibility of making the area not only usable as a ski resort but as a year ground facility using the area's proximity to National Parks, National Forest lands, State Parks and other scenic attractions. In the event that the feasibility feas-ibility study does prove that the area can be economically economical-ly developed, officials of Envirocon En-virocon and the local committee com-mittee will then begin to develop de-velop plans te interest nros-pective nros-pective ' developers, and will present . those plans to the developers. The feasibility study is being be-ing funded by a grant from the Four Corners Regional Commission. |
