"1 would like to emphasize again, "he said, "that It was never the intention of the San Juan County Commission to close access to the LaSal Mountains completely from the East side. When applicat-ins applicat-ins on the various routes were received, we had no alternative alterna-tive but to call a public hearing to consider them all. Those people who thought all applications appli-cations might have been approved, should have quickly received our assurance at the LaSal meeting that we had no intention of closing all the roads," he said. The two most hotly contested contes-ted routes left I'tah Highway 47 in the vicinity of Pine Ridge, extending northw ard to LaSal Pass, Dark Canyon Lake, and other areas of importance to recreationists and mineral developers. The western-most route, which traversed a recently reseeded portion of LaSal Livestock land, was requested to be closed by that company due to loss of livestock, litter problems, prob-lems, and damage to newly reseeded rangelands. The easternmost road, running through the Stocks Sawmill property, was asked to be closed by the Stocks interests. "Although that road is much narrower in places and not recommended for heavy equipment," Commission e r Black stated, "we felt that due to some recent improvement work and realignment, and the -eed for access to certain , n' it serves, it should also be left open." Two other applications for road closure, one in the Rattlesnake Ranch vicinity, and the other in Lisbon Valley-near Valley-near the old G. O. Patterson Ranch, were also denied by the San Juan Commissioners. Commissioner Black, who chairs the County Commission in Utah with the largest county road mileage and most difficult diff-icult terrain in the state of Utah, stated that he hoped the people of Grand County would continue to make their feelings known to the Commission on road matters of concern to Grand County residents. |
