Show High Cliff Rescue Demonstration Scheduled for Saturday Night A floodlight demonstration of mountaineering and rescue work on high cliffs will be given this Saturday night by Texas Gulf Sulphur sponsored Explorer Scouts. The rope technique rescue demonstration demonstra-tion starts at 8 p.m. May IB, at the Moab Boat Dock parking park-ing lot across the river from Lions Club Park. The Explorer Scouts, Post 2317, are under the leadership of Robert Migliori who is the post advisor. Associate advisors ad-visors of the post are Larry Stocks, Carl Davis, Ed Foy and Ed Hunter. Most of the rope technique has been taught by Carl Davis, newlv employed city police officer. The demonstration will consist con-sist of fast action activities which could be used in event of fallen climbers or persons stuck in tight places. The group of 15 youthful rescue experts are mainly students at Grand county high school. They have been under intensive inten-sive practice for the past five weeks in preparation for possible pos-sible calls for rescue. Rappeling is a rope science mastered by the Explorers. It involves a safe, friction-controlled descent by rope to any spot on the face of a cliff. The cliff they are demonstrating on is some 120 feet high and has numerous overhangs. Another secret of rope climbers climb-ers is the ability to climb back to the rim of a cliff by using a technique other than (he very dangerous hand-overhand method. The hand-overhand method tires a climber within only a few feet and provides no safety devices. The prussik, however, is th'! technique employed by skilled skill-ed climbers. This is a system in wh:ch three slings are used. One sling is around the chest, the other two are loops for each foot. The slings are attached at-tached to a main central rope by means of special knots which sl'de upward but never down. Climbers adjust onj sling at a time 'lnd slowly make their way up a rope in perfect comfort and safety. The main feature of the demonstration, however, will be the lowering of a man on a stretcher. The stretcher victim vic-tim will be lowered horizontally horizon-tally between two ropes in perfect control with two rope experts attending each end o tSe stretcher. At the bottom a fast-action crew will move in and transport the injured person to a waiting ambulance. ambu-lance. In this same connection connec-tion will be the rescue of a trapped boy from a high rock ledge. Tlvs Explorer Post is on call at all times for rescue work and has already assisted assist-ed in four rescues this year. They have sent 100 invitations to top officials of the state and all search and rescue units, jeep posses, the sheriff and police departments. The organization or-ganization plans to show the public Saturday night how readily available they are and will demonstrate their response re-sponse on a five-minute alert. They are equipped to rescue in any type of terrain, have five 4-wheel drive vehicles with CB radios and walkie talkies. The demonstration is free to the public. |
