Show Vernon Romney Announces for Atfy- Genera! Vernon B. Romney, a Salt Lake City attorney and former form-er Assistant Attorney General, Gener-al, this week announced his intention to seek the Republican Repub-lican nomination for the office of-fice of Utah Attorney General As the first candidate in either party to announce for the position, Mr. Romney said: "My goal will be to restore re-store the office of Attorney General to the realm in which the Constitution intended it to operate." He accused the incumbent of using the position as a forum for-um for advocating "his own pet projects," and said the Attorney General has been much more interested in trying try-ing to overturn many of the State's laws than in trying to uphold and strengthen them. He also criticized what he described as "unconscionable delays" in rendering important impor-tant opinions to State agencies. ag-encies. Mr. Romney, who has been engaged in private law practice prac-tice in Salt Lake City for 12 years, is associated with the firm of Romney and Nelson. He served for five years as an assistant to two Republican Republi-can Attorneys General, handling hand-ling many of the State's criminal cri-minal appeals, as well as serving as adviser to several State departments and agencies. ag-encies. Prior to serving in the Attorney At-torney General's office, from 1956 to 1961, Mr. Romney was an attorney for the Federal Fed-eral Communications Commission Com-mission in Washington, D. C. Earlier, he was an assistant in the Washington office of Senator Arthur V. Watkins. Before going to Washington, he was a reporter for the Deseret News. He is a member mem-ber of the Utah State Bar. the District of Columbia Bar and the American Bar associations. asso-ciations. An army veteran of World War II, he served with the 96th Infantry Division on Leyte and Okinawa. He is married to the former for-mer Patricia Pingree. They are the parents of six children. |
