Show AEC Approves Agreement With Colorado The Atomic Energy Com-miss'on Com-miss'on has approved an agreement under which Colorado Co-lorado will assume part of AEC's regulatorv authority over the use of radioactive materials in that state. The agreement will be signed by Gov. John A. Love for Colorado and by Com-m'ssioner Com-m'ssioner Gerald F. Tape for the Commission at a ceremony ce-remony in Denver on Jan. 16. The transfer of regulatory responsibilitv will include licensing, li-censing, rule making, and enforcement in the uses of radioisotopes, the source materials ma-terials uranium and thorium, thor-ium, and small quantities of fissionable materials. Ths Department of Health is the agency responsible for administering ad-ministering the State's rad-' iation control program. There are some 225 AEC licenses in Colorado for the use of radioactive radio-active materials. The Commission has found that the radiation control program proposed by Colorado Colo-rado is compatible with that of AEC and that it is adequate ade-quate to protect public safety safe-ty and health. The approved agreement is the same as that which was published for public comment com-ment and will be effective on February 1, 1968. The regulatory authority which Colorado will assume under the agreement with AEC is in addition to that which the State Health Department De-partment already exercises over x-ray machines and radium, ra-dium, and the State Bureau of Mines exercises over radiation ra-diation safety in uranium mines. Other states which have assumed regulatory authority author-ity from the AEC by agreement agree-ment are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana. Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, No. Carolina, Oregon Tennessee. Texas and Washington. |
