Show Red Devils Display Talent In Friday Infra-Squad Game by Danny Price White halfback Rodger Maynard galloped 60 yards around right end with only one minute remaining in the game for the winning touchdown as the White team nudged the Red 25-20 25-20 in the Grand County High School rain-soaked intrasquad game last Fri-dav. Maynard, who scored three times during the contest, took a handoff from sophomore QB Jeff Cowan, picked up a couple of blocks in the backfield and then scampered the rest of the way untouched The White squad, led by Maynard and halfback John Fossey, jumped off to a 13-0 halftime lead over the Red as Fossey o-pened o-pened the scoring in the first period by intercepting intercept-ing a Jim Cowan pass and running 15 yards for the first score. Leading 6-0, the White squad turned the tables once again in the second period as Fossey intercept ed another pass to set up the winners second tally. A few ninutes later Maynard May-nard broke loose for a 21 yard touchdown romp. Jeff Cowan hit Fossey with a short pass for the conversion and the White led comfortably at the half. The Red Devils and the local fans were hit by a heavy rain shower most of the first half but the storm blew away quickly as the second half action got underway un-derway without a drop. The White squad continued con-tinued to play havoc with the Red defense in the second half as Jeff Cowan combined with Maynard for a 70 yard TD pass on the first play from scrimmage scrim-mage in the third period. Down 19-0, the Red squad began to come alive as senior QB Jim Cowan, older brother of Jeff, connected con-nected with end Jerry Stewart for a 37 yard touchdown pass. Cowan kicked the extra point to bring the score to 19-7. A few minutes later the .white team fumbled the ball on a third down and long yardage situation and guard Dan Carter recovered recover-ed the hall for the Red at the White 36 yard line. Seven plays later fullback Butch Tangren bulled o-ver o-ver from the 4 yard line. Cowan connected with end Grant Gordon for. the extra ex-tra point and the White lead was cut another notch to 19-14. Red defensive back JDoug Carroll intercepted a pass at the outset of the fourth period and ran the ball to the 10 . yard line, setting up a Red touchdown touch-down that gave them the lead momentarily. A few plays later Jim Cowan scored on a quarterback sneak, giving the Red a 20-19 lead. After the Red kickoff, the White squad started to move from their own 42 yard line. But on the first play from scrimmage they were thrown back to their own 49. But the loss didn't make much difference differ-ence as Maynard scamper ed 60 yards on the next play for the clincher. |
