The seen? is so enormous enor-mous that it's not all understood un-derstood in a moment. We studied and stared. Bowknot Bend is the re-su't re-su't of a giant meander of " a the Green river. According to latest geological findings, find-ings, meandering takes place only in soft, level sediments. The meandering meander-ing probably established itself when this region was still like a swamp. Major Powell was intrigued in-trigued with the "exquisite "exquis-ite charm" of floating the course of the Bowknot. His journal tells of the rive turning first to the rig'ht making a circuit to the left, then again to the right and once more to the left almost a figure fig-ure eight. Fourteen Miles Powell measured the length of the figure as fourteen miles. Especially is the lower loop impressive impres-sive from Spring Canyon Point. Far beneath the water flows to the left then out of sight it makes a circuit to the right and comes into view flowing dh'cctly toward the observer. observ-er. Only GOO yards separate separ-ate the two portions of the same river one of the portions, however, is nine miles further downstream. down-stream. Labyrinth Canyon is what Powell named the twi ting gorge and it's quite fitting. The road which descends des-cends the switchbacks into Spring Canyon can be seen far below on the banks of the Green. Following this road would bring a jeeping party to the downstairs down-stairs views of the Bow-knot. Bow-knot. The road follows the outside circumference of Bowknot Bend and ends at I ley Joe Mine. So this account goes to prove that in whatever direction di-rection one takes from Moab there are surprises surpris-es in abundance. Spring Canyon Point and its overlook over-look of Bowknot Bend is a special treat for folks whose pressures have them tied in knots! |
