The American Legion did itself proud Tuesday with a successful rejuvenation rejuven-ation of an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration celebra-tion in Moab. A three gun s.ilute at sun-rise awoke the town, and residents turned out shv. V.y aftenv.ird for a chuck wagon breakfast at Lions River Toirk, attended attend-ed by some 400 people. Cooks for the affair were members of the Moab Lions Li-ons club, and a professional profession-al cook from the Roily Harper Movie Catering Service .pi toh?d in to holp when the rush .was on. After breakfast, John Riley, as a tall, red, white and blue costumed Uncle Sam, led Fourth' of July parade entries through the Main street of Moab. Hundreds Hun-dreds of people lined the street to watch the .precession .preces-sion of elaborate floats, several of which were singled sin-gled out for awards. The kids .had a hey-day at .Moab City Park for the next few hours. There were swimming contests, a water wa-ter show, and an assortment assort-ment of foot races for all ages, plus hotdogs, pop, and cotton candy. Many families 'brought -basket dinners and picnicked in the shady park. 'Kids ,pony races drew a sizable audience as an afternoon af-ternoon event, as did a baseball game ...pitting the American Legion Allstars against the men's town team. An evening pit barbecue barbe-cue supper at Legion Hall featured beef or lamb, plus hamburgers for the kids. The multitude of guests included local residents, res-idents, itoui-dsts, and Para- mount movie personnel -on location in Moab for the Tfort'heoming .western mo-' mo-' vie, ' Blue. ' ' j . At dark the .Legtonaires-- fired an exotic display of fireworks into V.nr n"ht sky from the cliffs ovc,--looking the city.' Tim colorful col-orful diplay continued for an h---.ur, and could seen from most homos in the valley. Enthusiastic crowds attended at-tended two dances to wind up fetivitips. The teen crowd danced on an open-air open-air floor 0n Center strce1 ; adults enjoyed a dance at Legion Hall. |
