Show Another 'proposed route through the Ute Indian reservation entails some 107 miles, and would cost an estimiated $10 million. The third route proposal had not been surveyed by the State, but officials said it was over rough terrain, and would be expensive construction. This route travels to PR Springs, along al-ong the crest of the Book Clif'fs, clown Sego Canyon and would intercept i-70 near Thompson. Commissioner Mars Pope indicated they would add no more roads to the .state network in the forseeable future. "More than we can take care of now," was the reason. If the long-proposed road over the Book Cliffs is buiilt, it must bo with .county funds, which according ac-cording to state estimates, would be cost prohibitive. Mr. Pope said. One alternative remains to push a jeep road through the Book Cliffs to connect Vernal with 1-70. The Utah National Guard has indicated willingness to construct the road, probably prob-ably next summer, if the county will jiiireliose necessary nec-essary materials, such as culverts, and if the county coun-ty can determine and secure se-cure the right of way. Mr. Pope said the pro-P'ic.l pro-P'ic.l route tJiroiif.1i the Ute reservation has been abandoned, since the Tribal Trib-al officials have continually continual-ly refused permission to cross their lands. Choice of Iho alternative routes has been a controversy since instigation of the proposal. Mr. Pope said a meeting would no doubt be held in th- near future to further discuss the issue. |
