At th asm tims tb Perao-crats Perao-crats of th house committee on ways and means, at a nijrht meetinsr formally decided to recommend to th house that it ask th senate for a conference on the wool tariff bill. The senate caucus adopted a resolution resolu-tion offered by Senator Bacon pledging Mjpport to the house free list bill and insuring concerted action by the Democrats Demo-crats in an effort to pats the measure, unamended. The result of the vote ir regarded doubtful, and it was agreed that in case of defeat the bill would be reoffered. modified by an a mend ment to bo submitted by Senator Kern, granting grant-ing the advantajrea of the bill only to those countries which admit free of duty Americaa corn, oats, cotton and hogs. Although the Bacon amendment was adopted unanimously Senator Bailey, whose proposed amendment to the bill adding farm products to the free list measure was killed by the actios of the caucus, withdrew with some of his followers fol-lowers before tbe vote was taken. Hi withdrawal was not ia th nature of a bolt, however, and a solid Democratic front is expected today. |
