They have talked with leading sheep and cattle men, many of whom will be witnesses at the hearing. Practically 'all of tha transcontinental freight rate rases have been settled by the Interstate com me roe commission, with the exception of .the rates on hides, pelts and wool. All of the complaints In these rases will be heard at the same time, affecting about 124 railroads of the country. The hearing; will open In Chicago September Sep-tember (. It Is expected that the hearing In Salt Lake City will last four or five day a , C. B. Stewart, secretary of the Utah Wool O rowers' association, said this morning that be had already taken the matter up with a number of the leading sheepmen of the state and that a number of them would be present at ths liearlng to give their testimony. Mr. Stewart seirl that there would also be a number of stockmen present from Montana, Idaho. Nevada and other western states. 8tock- i men In various parts of the country allege al-lege that the rates charged by tbe various railnwd companies are out of proportion to rates charged on other freight. Utah wool growers allege that they can ahip their wool from Utah common points to Los Angeles and then east at a cheaper rate than they can ship direct to the east from- Utah points. The railroad companies claim that the low rate from Los Angeles Is made In order to meet water competition, but tbe wool growers allege that It altogether too high. Trim and many other points will be threshed out before .h commission whan It meets In this city. Prom Salt Lake City Commissioner Prouty will go to Portland, Or., and later to Phoenix, Ariz., where hearings will be held on the same subject. |
