Show "NOT A CRAZY CREW." There was a riot in Atlanta, Ga., laat September in Trhidh ten innocent negroes and two white men were lynched. The riot was started chiefly by the Atlanta News. On the day of the riot, the News printed several sev-eral extras, with flaring headlines telling of the I alleged assaults committed by negroes. I Then the Fulton county grand jury hinted at ' an indictment of the persons responsible for the , policy of the paper. Then the people intervened, realizing what the News was, and one after another stopped their subscription and withdrew advertisements, advertise-ments, and the paper has been obliged to suspend publication. The "World exults over this result, and says : ; "The South can suppress all its demagogic poli-i poli-i ticians as well as its demagogic newspapers." And then it adds: "San Francisco can smother all that crazy crew who are doing their best to plunge the United States 1 into a war with Japan." That "crazy crew" in San Francisco is not ; seeking any war with Japan. That "crazy crew" understands very well how serious to San Francisco ! a war with Japan would be, and "that crazy crew" is composed of the best men of the Pacific coast, who ; are better men than the average man or newspaper in New York City. They simply long ago took the stand that they would not admit Asiatic children into the schools with their own children. They are going to stick to it, even if San Francisco is by and by bombarded. They want no trouble with Japan, nor any other country, but they are shrewd men, and they understand under-stand that to surrender a point, or to give up something some-thing which they believe is a sacred principle, lest they provoke a war with a fighting nation, would not put off the war. If Japan is intent upon a war, she'll find some excuse for it. In the meantime, the men of San Francisco are going to do the right thing, and take the chances on what may follow. |
