Show POOL SCORCHERS NENACE CHILDREN Youngsters Han Down and Injured ' by Bicyclists Who RecKlessly Dash Along SidewalKs. Within the last two days three children chil-dren have narrowly escaped being run down by bicycle scorchers. In one case the mother of the child, who witnessed the sight of her-child being missed but an inch or two by a fool rider, has been ill since, and it was necessary to call in a physician. THE TELEGRAM called attention to the reckless riding of messenger boys in the business district dis-trict of the city some time ago. The habit of reckless riding is not, however, confined to the business district. dis-trict. The fine weather of the last few days had brought from the cellar and garret nearly every "bike" in the city and the riding on sidewalks by hundreds hun-dreds is a daily practice. A majority of the riders are careful, but there are some who appear to have no respect for the rights of the predestrian. . Every year children are run down by this class of riders. There is a restricted re-stricted bicycle district in the city, but it is in force from April 15 to October 15 of each year, only. This districtj however, . covers only a small part of the paved sidewalks in the city. Every year sees miles of new sidewalks laid. These are used only too often by peddlo-nusher to the danger of the life and limbs of children chil-dren who play on the sidewalks. Several months ago an ordinance was introduced in the City Council to extend ex-tend the bicycle district.' It is understood under-stood that the proposed ordinance was referred to the proper eommittee, but to date no report has been made on it. Said a prominent citizen this morning: morn-ing: "It is time that the City Council Coun-cil took some action to prevent the reckless riding of scorchers on the sidewalks side-walks of Salt Lake and to extend the restricted district." A member of the Citv Council stated to THE TELEGRAM "that he was of the opinion that the ordinance as it now stands should be amended so as to cover the entire paved district and that if necessary the punishment of offenders offen-ders should be increased. |
