(Special to Telegram.) r MORGAN, Utah, Feb. 21. Leo Kraus, engineer, was I killed and Hinley, the fireman, was injured, in the ; wreck of Union Pacific passenger train No. 10, three tniles1 east of here about 11 o'clock this morning. ; Kraus was buried beneath the engine, and early this . afternoon his body had not been removed. The exact ex- ; tent of Hinley 's injuries is not definitely known here, but ' from' the reports received it is believed they are not mor-; A 1 ' tel. A rockslide caused the accident. None of the passen-j was iniured. Three mail clerks were badly bruised. I THEI ENGINE TURNED OVER AND PLUNGED DOWN A SLIGHT EMBANKMENT. TWO BAGGAGE and. a- mail oar -were derailed, de-railed, but remained in an upright position. the; accident occurred a short distance before the WEST ENTRANCE TO A TUNNEL WAS REACHED. THE TRACK - IS UPGRADE, AND IT IS BELIEVED THE TRAIN WAS NOT RUNNING AT A HIGH RATE OP SPEED. THIS ACCOUNTS, IN LARGE MEASURE, . ' FOR THE FACT THAT NONE OF THE CARS WAS OVERTURNED , AND ALL PASSENGERS ESCAPED SERIOUS INJURY. THE EXACT SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS DEVIL'S SLIDE. At soon as the first report of the : wreck reached here the division offices in Ogden were notified mnd a wreck- injr train was sent from that point. As soon as the crew arrived it set to work in the effort to lift the engine. It was believed the track would be cleared and traffic resumed late this afternoon. Kraus, the dead engineer, lived at 2853 Grant avenue, - Ogden. He was married. Ogden is also the home ef Hinley, the fireman; ' The sleeper which leaves Salt Lake City at 7:10 o'clock in the morning is attached to this train in Ogden. It was stated at the local offices of the Oregon Short Line company this morning morn-ing that no reservations for sleeper accommodations on this morning's train had been made here. No. 10 Is the fast mall train lately put In service on the Union Pacific. |
