Show PLENTY OF DUCKS ARE THERE STILL President SchefsKi Answers Story of the Wholesale Deaths by Pointing to Many Live Birds. What has become of those 999,999 dead ducks that were reported to' be lying around the aloughs near the mouth of the Jordan river a few days ago! It was reported in this city that at least a million duoks were dead, and that unless something was done at once, there would not be a live one in the Btate, especially that part of the State near the month of the muddy little river. Sportsmen got busy with theories as to what was causing this wholesale death. A few of the ducks were brought to the city, but the thousands of dead ones were left where they had died. As to what caused death every hunter had a different idea. Now come F. F. Schefski, president offthe State Came and Fish association, who savs that there never were more ducks at the mouth of the Jordan than at the present time, and they are real live, healthv ducks, too. Speaking of the conditi'on of the ducks, Schefski Vvs: 11 There were never so many ducks alive and flying as there are now in the Jordan sloughs. The winter has been mild and the ducks have not migrated. There is plentv of open water, and the ducks appear healthful and in good condition. con-dition. The report that they are all dying dy-ing off is untrue. In a season 's shooting there are hundreds of ducks, crippled, which will fly a long distance before thev drop. Sometimes a duck struck by a shot or two will live for days. A crippled due k after getting into the rufhes is helpless ana will utay there and die. It doesn't Pt out and feed and finally dies. "After wading out to the mouth of the river I found one dead duck. There were no others to he seen, and 1 believe that the dead ducks that were found on the river were crippled from the shooting shoot-ing season. I intend to investigate the matter more fully befoie I make any report on it for the association." Keports from Bear river show that there were never more ducks in that part of the State than at the present time. Someone has another story coming. |
