Up to 1 o'clock una afternoon the Sheriff had jo trace of the. man who is acknowledged .to be th- cleverest criminal that has ever come over the "pike" in Salt Lake. , . As announced in TjtlE TELEGRAM of yesterday, a description of the escaped es-caped prisoner was sent in every direction. di-rection. Every member of the police and Sheriff's force was put to work on the case as soon as possible. Members of the Sheriff's force wentMa every direction di-rection that it was thought the man might have taken. Some' of. them have returned to the city, while others are still out, but the story of each is the same, "no Had." To Offer a Reward. There is little question in the minds of the officers but that Riis is wanted in more than one city in the country. Sheriff Emery stated this afternoon that a reward would likely be offered for the capture of the escaped prisoner. There is more than one man who believes be-lieves that Riis is still in Salt Lake City, unless he left last night. That a man of his character should have friends in kind in every big city in the country is admitted. That he knew where to find such friends within a few minutes after he escaped there is little or no question. That they would do anything and everything ev-erything in their power to protect him is not doubted. An officer who has had more thsn twenty years' experience, said this morning that it is his opinion that Riis is in hiding in this city snd that he will be taken rare of by his friends until the wind calms down. Thinks Ells Is Here. "A man of that character," said the officer, "is too wise to try to get cut of town after escaping from jail. He knows that every train, every station and every officer for hundreds of miles will be on the lookout for him. This will last for a few davs, then the vigilance vigi-lance will cease and the man can make his get away with little fear of bein caught. "The class of men such as Riis is are nU taking hmv more chances than they have to. lliere is a brotherhood among that class of men that would surprise the great majority. The old saying. 'Birds of a feather flock together' to-gether' was never truer than in the case of such men as Riis. If he is a leader of his kind he never need want for a friend. Unfortunately thern are more thsrf one man of a type inferior to Kiis in every big city, who wiilAo at anv ler.gthTo assist such men ase with the hope that he mav assist them at some future date. The escape of Riis is most unfortunafe. He has proven prov-en himself to be a desperate man and one of the cleverest crooks that ever came to Salt Lake." |
