Show VOLCANIC ACTIVITY IN WORLDGREATER Earthquakes Fewer but Destruction De-struction Heavier WASHINGTON. Feb. 12. There were fewer earthquakes in the United States and throughout the world last year than In 1919, but those of a destructive de-structive character were more numerous numer-ous and there also was much mora volcanic vol-canic activity. Records compiled by Professor Francis Fran-cis A. Tondorf, director of the seismologies! seismo-logies! observatory-and head of the department de-partment of geology of Georgetown university here, show ninety-three earthquakes were trlt In the United States compared with ninety-seven In 1919. while peoorts from all oar is of the world show 111, quakes were reported re-ported as compared with 468 In 1919. Kleven of the earthquakes last year resulted In destruction of life or property, prop-erty, while In the previous year only seven caused such losses. The most destructive during 1920 were those at Mendoxa, Argentina and the Tepellnl district of Italy, both of which occurred oc-curred In December; and those reported re-ported from Mexico City and Vera Crux. Mexico; Mines Geraes, Braail; the island of Tap, in the Pacific ocean; Cadis, Spain; the Island of Formosa, the Island of Malta, Japan: Flvixsano, Italy; Giarre, Italy, and Grenada, i , Spain. California reported the largest number num-ber of earth tremors of any locality in the United States In 1920 with a total of sixty-two. while In 1919 California reported eighty. The Georgetown university uni-versity . seismographs recorded eighty-two eighty-two quakes during tne year. None of the earthquakes reported In the United States resulted In any loss of life or extensive destruction of property. In addition to California's sixty-Two reports for 1920, five were felt in Utah, three each In Washington, Oregon. Missouri, Mis-souri, Illinois and Colorado, two each in Maine, Tennessee and South Dakota, and one each In Wyoming, New Hampshire. Hamp-shire. Montana, Virginia and South Carolina.
