Show JURY FINDS SHIP JJRIKEJ.IUTINY 'BALTIMORE, Dec IT VPt All but one of 14 seamen convicted of mutiny aboard the government owned freighter Alglc remained In jail today while their counael prepared pre-pared a petition for a new trial. A federal court Jury decided yes-terday yes-terday the men were guilty of mutiny mu-tiny in holding a tit-down strike on the ship at Montevideo, Uruguay. September 10. The seamen were convicted under a 1790 statute of conspiring and attempting to revolt re-volt Judge W. Calvin Chesnut withheld with-held sentence until Monday. Both counts of the indictment carry a possible maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment, $1000 fine, or both. Wilfred T. McQuaid, defense lawyer, law-yer, said motion for a new trial would be filed, possibly tomorrow, and Judge Chesnut said argument on the motion would be heard the same day. Thirteen of the defendants were remanded to custory pending renewal re-newal of the $900 bond under which they had been free. One defendant, John H. Croghan of Pawtucket, R. L, was released to Charles Hansen of the National Maritime union, a C I O affiliate. Oregham was ta undergo- Hospital treatment. |
