Some American Federation organizers are doing a pretty slick Job them-' . selves, as witneas what is happen ing in the liquor industry. The A. F. of L, people started In on ths drivers of liquor trucks, who were comparatively easy to unionize. Warehouse employes logically came next. Then began the real tough assignment the white collar workers salesmen, etc. The organizers began this stage of their campaign by going after salesmen for wholesale liquor houses. t Their argument was simple! If you don't join, union truckers won't deliver what you sell and your job won't be worth a hoot. That lined up the wholesale boys In pretty short order. From there the unionizing spread downward to retail liquor clerks and upward to representatives representa-tives of distillers and importers. The latter are being aignsd up now threatened with a boycott by stores employing union clerks if they don't The system is very effective and the industry is rapidly approaching ap-proaching a state of complete unionization. Very few demands have been made on employers as yet, which astutely minimizes employer em-ployer resistance. Clifford Town send of Indiana In-diana will ascribe his recent spotlighted spot-lighted activity in "settling" labor difficulties to a definite political ambition. A governor of Indiana serves for four years and la forbidden by law to aeek reelection. Townsend is reported to have his eye on the Democratic vice presidential nomination nom-ination in 1940. He is aald to feel that he is in a strategic position aa governor of an important doubtful state in the middle west He is, also understood under-stood to rate his chances superior to those of Frank Murphy of of Michigan and of Martin Davey of Ohio who showed an anti-labor anti-labor attitude. If public opinion accepts him as the "strong man" who ended the East Chicago walkouts, hia "campaign" will be off to a good start Financial men with close Washington Wash-ington contacts report that one of the pet congressional peeves at the White House is Secretary Marvin Mclntyre. The complaint is that "Mac" lets some people see the president B0 times a year while other Democrats Demo-crats of equal political stature can't pry their way in with a crowbar. One Democraitc congressman elected in 1930 two years before Roosevelt says he has never been able to see the president In the White House since the first Inaugural.
