Show Deplorable Display Of Voter Apathy : Salt Lake City's voters have chosen two city commissi ontrs and a city auditor. Ben I. Ungenfelter, appointed to the commission last June to take the place of Fred Tedesco, who resigned, led in the commissioner race as expected. But his margin of vietory over the second place winner, Joe L, Chrlstensen, was surprisingly narrow. Ungenfelter polled 11,087 votes to Christensen's 21,585. Thai's a real tribute to the recreation leader's final campaign drive because -. in the primary he finished more' than i 4000 votes behind Llngenf elter. I William Wallace Home made a strong bid la the commission race, running only about 8000 votes behind the leader. The poor showing of Mrs. C. L. Jack, who received leas than half as many votes as the two winners, was unexpected. It sad been thought ahe would be a real threat . In (act the feminine sex fared rather badly In the Utah municipal elections. Not only was Mrs. Jack snowed under, but Logan voters turned down a woman candidate for mayor. No woman won any eity office in Utah's larger towns, according to press reports. Salt Lake City voters also registered reg-istered their views oa the question of shorter on-duty time (or firemen, approving ap-proving a referendum (or a cut from 73 to 83 hours a week by a (our to one vote. And the voters reelected Louis X. Holley city auditor by a substantial ' margin over Jerrold P. Beesley. . While the election was hotly contested ia the commission race, the turnout was quite small, less than 40,000 votes being ' cast That indicates a disturbing degree of voter apathy in an election which , closely and directly affects their welfare wel-fare and their pocketbooks. The Telegram has no congratulation congratula-tion to offer to th qualified electorate of this city, therefore, although it does extend Its heartiest congratulations to the winning candidates. They did their part of the Job of making democracy work, even if far too many thousands of the people they Will represent looked the other way oa election day. . |
