Show THAT EIGHT-HOUR BILL The eight-hour bill which is now pending in Con-1 Con-1 Cress will bring labor and capital together in a controversy con-troversy which will arouse bitter feeling whatever the result of the campaign may be. Renewed ef-! ef-! forts are put forth by President D. M. Darry of the Xctical Association of Manufacturers to defeat w.at the . association considers objectionable features fea-tures in the measure. As a result of the representations representa-tions made by the association, the Senate Committee Commit-tee on Labor and Education has so amended the : Senate bill as to render it. unacceptable to 'the 'American Federation of Labor. The federation is nowj planning to bring into the Senate the original Ilouse bill, with all "of the provisions which the Association As-sociation of Manufacturers terms "unconstitutional, destructive tind preposterous." In order that this plan may be defeated the association members are being urged to use their influence with the Senators to induce them to resist any effort to call up either the amended Senate bill or the" House bill. On the other hand the labor leaders have marshaled their forces and purpose to make a united stand for the , House bill. : There seems to be no hope of drafting a compromise measure which would be acceptable to both factions, and the question must be fought to a decision. It is to be regretted that the manufacturers manufac-turers are determined to prevent even debate on either -the Senate or House bill. In a free discussion discus-sion of the rival bills alone lies the hope of finally adjusting the differences between the labor leaders and the manufacturers and of enacting legislation which will be satisfactory. Let the issues be debated de-bated and give, the champions of both sides ample opportunity to present the merits, of House and Sen. te bills." ' |
