Show FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER TRADED FOR TON OF COAL Widow Gircs Up Her Child to "Provide Fuel for Herself Her-self and Others of Family. BINGHAMTON, N. Y., Jan. 19. Unable to obtain a supply of fuel.' with the thermometer below zero. Mrs. Arthur Mitchell of Glen wood. Pa., mis been obliged to trade her four-year-old daughter for coal. ' v Mrs. Mitchell is the mother of five children, the father being dead. One of the girls is very pretty and took the fancy of Mrs. F. L. Cooper,-who last summer sum-mer offered to adopt her, but the mother. would not hear of a separation. Dire necessity and the hope of providing warmth for the other children led her to pen a communication to jMrs. Cooper the past week offering her Lillie if she would send a ton of coal. Mrs. Cooper at once took charge of Lillie, sending an order for coal enough to supply the Mitchell family for the winter, and also an order for provisions. She will formally adopt the child. |
