"Kid" McCoy, the prize-fighter, went out to the Hawthorne race track and for .a few moments .was a star attraction, not in the betting ring, but in the barroom, incidentally.. Haley Williams, a New Orleans plunger, who la a guest at a downtown hotel, found cause for regret that he had a poor memory for faces. ... Just after the third race Williams and several friends were standing at the bar. when McCoy and two other men stepped up and asked for drinks. The pugilist's elbow touched Williams, and the latter, priding himself upon his 250 pounds avoirdupois, gave McCoy a shove and in a snarling voice ordered him to "get off the earth." "You measly little "butt-In,' " he said, "get out. Fine business for you kids to get fresh," aijd then he shoved a little more and used language that would anger an-ger even a pugilist. The reference to McCoy as a "kid" seemed to rouse the figkter to full recognition recog-nition of his own Individuality, but he made no verbal reply. Suddenly, and apparently without drawing back his hand he landed a Fix-inch "hook" on the heavy man's right Jaw. Twenty minutes later Mr. Williams came out of his trance. "Where am I?" he asked. "Well, you are here, and that will be about all, but you ought to be thankful." thank-ful." replied one of his friends. ."What pulled the grandstand down?" "It hasn't been pulled down." "Then it was an earthquake or a cyclone cy-clone or a thirteen-lnch shell." "No; Just one of those famous punches which 'Kid McCoy mixed for you" "The 'kid'? Was that McCoy? Well" and he went back into hla trance. |
