Show GRAND JURY IS TURNING SEARCHLIGHT ON F. G. LUKE'S COLLECTION AGENCY The grand Jury is today . making a careful investigation of the methods of operation used by the Trancls G. Luke collection agency. It is asserted that his concern has frequently caused excessive ex-cessive costs to be taxed against debtors and the Jury is determined to prooe the matter to the bottom. Several employees of the - Luke agency were called as witnesses this morning, and it is said that the Jury will next examine half a dozen persons from whom Luke 'has collected or. attempted at-tempted to collect bills. Judge McMaster, ex-Justice of Peace, was the first witness called. He was detained about thirty minutes. Justice McMaster nas handled a number num-ber of cases for the Luke agency, and he Anally refused to try any. more cases for the firm. Why he declined to do anything more for 'the concern was probably told In his interview with the jury. Miss Nellie E. Gleason, who works for the agency as filing clerk and bookkeeper, book-keeper, was called. She has been connected con-nected with the Arm about four and a half years. She asserted proudly this morning that all methods .used by Luke ; were honest and. businesslike, and that! she knew of several instances where he treated some of his Indebted clients , with charity. She was only detained about twenty-five minutes. Mary E. .Jensen, one of Luke's stenographers, was then called and was detained about twenty minutes. 1 She also spoke in high terms of her employer. em-ployer. A. F. Mallet, who lives on Third South near Ninth East, was the next witness called. Mr. Mallet says he is not a polygamist, does not know any polygamists and never had Luke Brothers collect a bill for him. He Rlro asserted that he wa at a loss to know why he had been summoned. sum-moned. It is thought that a new case of alleged polygamy may have been taken up. |
