Show DISCOVERY OF AMERICA TOLD IN . CURIOUS VOLUME J CHICAGO, June . The Newberry II-brarv II-brarv has been presented by Edward A. Ayer,' the noted bibliophile and book collector, col-lector, with a valuable collection of maps and manuscripts covering the history his-tory of the French marine from the thirteenth thir-teenth century to the Franco-Prussian war. The collection was made by Paul A Carter, who was in the service of the French. Government for'many years up to the time of his death in 1896. There are 4100 maps and about 6000 pages of text. Mr. Carter-was thirty years m accumulating accu-mulating the material, which he intended intend-ed to use in writing a history, of the French marine. Mr. Ayer purchased the collection from the (Librarie Chadenat on his last visit to Paris, whence he returned about three weeks ago. He also secured for Ms private library a curious old .volume, "The Nufemburg Qhronicles," printed in 1493. Among the news items of the period pe-riod it tells of the discovery of America. |
