The race meeting at the fair grounds n Thursday waa full of close finlshea and exciting racing and the crowd that braved tha threatened rainstorm ent away filled with satisfaction. - The air was full of broken records aad pieces of sulky, and It was no place for a man with heart disease. For tha first time one of the running races resulted In a close finish and the crowd went wild. There was also- a dead heat In the Z:30 trot and pace when three horses finished SO close together that they could hardly be distinguished apart. There waa a irreat field ntere4 In tne S:S0 pace and trot, which Fleetaway took In four heats alter a atruggle. Fleetaway won the first two heats with some ease, but In the third heat Francis C. made a great bid all the way. and but for tne great driving of Johnny McCoy, would have won. In the second heat of this same race Joe McGregor and Amerla collided on the back stretch and both drivers were thrown from their sulkies. Yorke, who waa driving Ameria, waa slightly bruised, but Edwards, who fall In tha middle of the bean, was uninjured. Joe McGregor scrambled to his reet and ran right in among the leaders, with the broken sulky hitting him at every jump. It looked for a moment aa if he might collide with some of the others, but finally drew clear without further accident. Ue ran a full mile befpre he was caught, but Amerla waa caught oa the home stretch. Fleetaway Fleet-away had little difficulty In taking the last and deciding heat. Crabapple took three straight heats In the 2:15 trot and pace In the fastest time ever made for a heat race In Utah. The flrst heat was in 2:17, the second in 2:15, the State record, and the third in 8:16, an average for the three heats of 8:16. In the first heat Osmont on the pale got off first, but Crabappie drew up at once and contested for tha pole, Osmont was not able to stand the terrific pace, ami broke badly on the second In p. Before he could catch his feet again Crabappie was safely safe-ly in the lead, with Julia A. second, and they finished In that order. In the second sec-ond heat Crabappie led all the way, with Thompson trying in vain to forte Osmont :o the front. In the third heat Crabappie again led all the way, and Julia A. beat Osinont out for the place, but waa disqualified dis-qualified for foul driving. . Peem roda his fifth straight winning mount on Thursday. He far outclasses the other boys riding here and shows excellent ex-cellent judgment. In the mile and one-f one-f lghth race he took Slssenvlne to the front it the start and leading all the way won. nulled up by three lengthy from Grey Lot jnl Geisha Girl, who finished second and third respectively.
