BUIXETUT. TOXZO, Oct. 7, 2rfJO p. m. It Is re-ported re-ported here that the fire of the Japanese Japa-nese land batteries severely damaged four Russian warships in the harbor of Fort Arthur. It Is stated that one of the vessels was completely wrecked. The names of none of the ' ships were given. ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 7, :U a. m. The only reference to the reported sea fight oft Port Arthur is contained In a delayed de-layed special dispatch from Chefoo, which says that on the night of October S the sound of firing was heard In the direction of Port Arthur, and that searchlights were seen to be working in that vicinity. It la thought there may have been a battle, but no confirmation of the report of one has been received. ' All Attacks Repulsed. ' The dispatch further states that, in spite of the tightening of the Japanese' blockade, block-ade, Junks are still arriving from the fortress fort-ress bearing refugees, who say that ail the,-y attacks of the Japanese hare been repulsed, re-pulsed, and that it will be necessary to institute in-stitute a long siege and a complete blockade block-ade in order to reduce the fortress. The blockade, according to tne refugees, is not completely effective. Junks continually arriving ar-riving with food supplies- and munitions for the garrison. The Japanese have instituted in-stituted a close patrol over the entire Tel-low Tel-low sea, stopping every vessel sighted |
