Show ROAD UNDER OPTION TO UNION PACIFIC ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 2. Vague rumors ru-mors to the effect that the Union Pacific Pa-cific is trying to gain possession of the Chicago & Great Western In order to put a quietus on periodic disturbances of rates east of the Missouri river, which have been traced to that road, have been c irculated for the past month, tut yesterday the first definite news of the deal was reported. It was given out at Great Webtern headquarters that the road was under option to the Union Pacific, or had actually been sold. President Stickr.ey of the Great Western denied the rumored ru-mored pal several days ago, but his denial was denied and was couched in words that would admit of a liberal construction. In making the denial President Stickney paid that there was nothing in the report, and that the road would continue its policy of getting the business by the methods that have proved aggravating to competitors. It is also definitely stated that John D. Rockefeller has been acting with Harriniuu in the I'nlon Pacific bull deal in Wall street, ind the interests' of the Standard Oil chieftain are identical with those of Haniman in the present matter. mat-ter. Rockefeller Interests control the Milwaukee Mil-waukee and as that road is a competitor of the Great Western the removal of the line from the field of competition vould be desirable from the Rockefeller viewpoint. |
