Show Open Trial for the Russian Jews. - ' Reports from Russia are to the effect that the Jews of the empire are more than gratified over the fact that they are to be accorded trials in open court for the prisoners charged with the responsi-y responsi-y tility of the anti-Jewish riots in September of last ear. A Russian " Jewish newspaper is especially . pleased, declaring that the change in the policy of the officials marks a new era on the part of the Government Gov-ernment toward the Jewish question, and stating .' that it is one of the longest strides toward a final settlement of this much mooted matter. It may be that Russia 'has at la6t seen the light regard to. the Jews, but it is far more probable That tbt Russian Government, at the present time, feels the need of all the internal aid and support " that can be accorded it, both financially and otherwise, other-wise, and knows that the Jews will tally to the support sup-port of Russia at the first sign of anything approaching approach-ing fair treatment. - To the foremost nations of the world it seems almost al-most incredible that such a thing as an open trial should he cause for nationally expressed gratitude, as it is considered the inalienable right of every cit-izen. cit-izen. but to the Jews of Russia, long ground-under the heel of despotism, there is no doubt that this .'" comes as a light out of great darkness. Russia, oppressed as she is with the burden of the Japanese losses, and practically on the verge of a break with one of the most powerful nations of the world, doubtless feels that it is best to have even the despised Jews with them, and for this reason more . than for any love of the Jewish people, has granted this semblance of fair dealing. |
