Couriers who came In today from the posse in chase of the two bandits who killed I. O. Middaugh. cashier of the First National Na-tional bank of Cody yesterday afternoon, after-noon, brought news that the outlaws are still at large. After fighting a battle with the murderers mur-derers on Sage creek, eighteen miles southeast of Cody, last night, the outlaws out-laws fled into the hills and the posses went on to Meeteetse, for fresh horses, provisions, ammunition and guides. They returned to the scene of the battle bat-tle at midnight and again took up the trail. In the fight on Sage creek no one was hit, although no less than 200 shots were fired by both sides. Deputy Chapman's horse was shot under him. The outlaws out-laws appeared to bear charmed lives ' for they exposed themselves recklessly. They carry the latest pattern quick-firing quick-firing rifles, smokeless pow der, and also have Colt revolvers. They seem to know every foot of the country. Posses from Meeteetse, Basin and other points are hurrying to the scene and soon the mountains will swarm with the man-hunters. Two celebrated Indian trailers from the Crow reservation reserva-tion and from Pine Ridge have been sent for and the bloodhounds that were used in trailing the Northern Pacific train robbers have been ordered from Lincoln, Neb. Col. Cody will reach Cody City tonight to-night with his party of hunters. Indian In-dian trailers and guides and will join the chase with the saddle and pack horses and outfits that had been prepared pre-pared for the game hunt in the Yellow- 1 stone and Tetons country. 1 |
