ON FARM MATTERS WASHINGTON NoV; In his annual report to the President, Secretary of Agriculture Ag-riculture Wilson enumerates some of the more Important features of the year's work. Among them, are extensive cooperation co-operation with agricultural stations; the taking pf . preliminary steps to conduct feeding and breeding experiments; the war waged against the cotton boll weevil and against eattle mange; plans- for education edu-cation of engineers-In. .road building; the production of a hardy orange; ; a hybrlJ of the Florida orange and the Japanese trifoliata; valuable research in successful shipping of fruit abroad; the value of nitrogen-fixing bacteria; successful introduction intro-duction of plants suited to light rainfall rain-fall areas; establishment of pure focd standards; the extension of agricultural education la primary and secondary schools; the extension of instruction to our island possessions to enable them to supply the country with $200,000,000 worts of domestic products, now imported from abroad. In regard to the sugar beet the chief effort of the department has been to effect ef-fect Improvement in the seed and to study the diseases with a view to the discovery of remedies. Strains of pedigreed seed are being established in New York, Michigan. Mich-igan. Utah and Washington, having Already Al-ready assumed commercial importance In the last two States. It seems to be a question of but a few years when the entire 6,000.090 pounds used In- the United States will be produced at home. There has been a demand for expert-mental expert-mental work in fruit marketing and storage stor-age in fruit regions on the Pacific coast, and Investigations will be extended during dur-ing the prevent winter in the citrus industry in-dustry of California. It Is believed that a profitable system of agriculture can be developed for the sml-arid areas of the United States by securing crops which will grow with a very small amount of water. Consider able progress has been made in this direction. |
