The so-called "undesirable" immigrants continue to make up the bulk of the new arrivals. During the month of April more than 50 per cent of the immigrants im-migrants were from the three countries that furnish ihe worst class of foreigners namely, Austrla-IIun-gary, Italy and Kussia. More than one-third of all the immigrants were from Italy alone, that country furnishing 34,249 additions to the population of the United States in April, while Austria contributed 13,689. A scant 8000 came from Russia. One of the cheerful signs is an increase in the immigration of Irish, women. There was a gain of several hundred hun-dred in immigrants of this, nationality at the different differ-ent ports id April. ; "Assisted" Immigration Checked. Tliere has been a marked falling off in immigra-tion immigra-tion to the United States during the past few months, and the officials at Washington are inclined to ascribe the fact to the efforts that have been made to break up "assisted immigration'' on the uart of foreign steamship companies. The decline in immigration during the mouth of April amounted to 25 per cent, comjmred with the corresponding month of last year. The difference in March, was not quite so large, but the falling off ' was decided. The foreigners reported from the different ports of entry during the month of April numbered 91,-3C8, 91,-3C8, against 120,286 for April, 11103. The alien arrivals ar-rivals in March of this year were 78,13C, as compared com-pared with 91,606 during March of last year.
