But alas! she had failed to calculate the workings of the PARTY LINE. In vain she shouted fire, fire and cried In terror into the transmitter. Central could not tell wfoere she was talking fro it as there were four or more residences resi-dences on the same line. They connected connect-ed the little tot with Fire Headquarters. The kind-hearted firemen, la their anxiety anx-iety to help, thought they heard the right address. Part of the apparatus was hurried to where they understood the little child 'was In peril, only to find themselves mistaken. Finally, a neighbor, seeing the flames, turned in the alarm over the Independent 'phone. No mistakes this time. 'No party lines to complicate. The operator at their Central knew just where it came from, as the neighbor was the only one on the line. The remainder of the Fire Department, Depart-ment, that had not gone on the wild goose chase,- responded promptly and soon extinguished the blase. But what of the little child? Ifs guardian angel was probably re xmsible for the casual passing of a pedestrian, who seeing the little one's danger, promptly burst through the window and rescued It In a suffocating condition. But, why use party lines? There Is such a thing as flying in the face of Providence once too often, and there may be instances where even your guardian angel cannot save you from the many perils threatened by the party line. |
