Show PRESIDENT CLARK WILL INSPECT THE SAN PEDRO Montana Senator Says That Railroad Will Occupy His Attention; Cannot Speak Here. President "William A. Clark of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Route arrived In Salt Lake City Saturday morning at S o'clock over the Oregon Short Line from Butte, Mont. He was driven at once to the Knutsford where he called for his mall and from there went directly to the office of General Manager R. E. Wells. The consultation of Senator Clark with the official of the road took only an hour and a half, but In that time many details were discussed which are of great Importance to the future of the line. This Is perhaps the laet visit Senator Sen-ator Clark will pay Salt Lake before the route Is completed. During the conference the map showing show-ing the various entrances to the cut-off was brought In by Mr. Brown and quite a lengthy discussion ot this part of the work was hai. Senator Clark and party will leave Saturday afternoon on a special train for the terminal of the road, arriving at Las Vegas shortly before daylight. They will spend some time at this point, leav- lng In time to get back Monday' morning. morn-ing. Senator Clark will then leave for Montana to again take the stump la the Interest of his party. ' Senator Clark speaking of the mat ters under consideration at this time stated to The Telegram: "We are taking our trip to Las Vegas for the purpose of a general inspection of the road. The location for the machine ma-chine shops will be selected. We will view the progress that has been made. Inspect the ballasting and take a general gener-al view of the situation 'at the front "We are rushing the work as fast as possible, considering that we must make the road the very best piece of railroad construction ever built. "Our rails are all delivered at the points at which they are to be used and the very excellent weather is a blessing that Is helping us to complete the road. "The road will positively be completed com-pleted by the 1st of January. "Our rolling stock is all ordered and" the greater part of it ia neaiing completion. com-pletion. We have ordered fifty-one of the finest passenger and freight locomotives locomo-tives and approximately two thousand cars. Our Pullman service can be completed com-pleted In sixty days and will be the fines fin-es equipment ever turned out of the shops. This is for the Salt Lake local. "Our Los Angeles-Chicago limited will not be put In operation until the ballast of the road Is thoroughly established. We want no accidents and the administration adminis-tration of the road will see that all details de-tails of precautionary measures are carried out to the letter. When we do commence this service we will run one train each way dally. "I am informed that the rails are now laid several miles below Las Vegas and that construction is heading for Gold Spring summit. As they are laying the rails from the Daggett end of the road equally fast, the gap cannot be much more than sixty 'miles it may be more though, but not much." Asked concerning his views of the political situation he said: "I am not here on a political mlswion, but, in Montana I have been In the field continually for some time. Next week I will make six addresses in Montana. Of course, the wish may be father to the desire, but I feel it within me that Parker Par-ker will win. I receive advices ore the matter from Sheehan, Taggart and other Eastern leaders which lead me to believe this. Montana la strongly Democratic. Owing to my appointments appoint-ments I cannot possibly speak la this city, though I would be more than glad to do so." |
