Show PACIFIC NATIONAL SERIES IS OPENED ' SAN FRANCISCO. April 15. The opening open-ing game (if the Pacific National league was a pleasing contest, being full of sharp, clean fielding and with a spectacular opening open-ing that' enthused the large crowd of spectators. In the opening Inning, when San Francisco was at bat and two men on bases, Mcrshall Lit-the ball over the fense for a home run and the trio of tallies that resulted were the only ones scored in the play. A feature was the superb pitching of Dowling of Butte, who struck out eleven elev-en men. The play had a semi-official start from the fact that Mayor Schmltx tossed the first ball over the plate. Seattle won the opening frame of the season Jn. the ninth, inning with two men out. Both Hogg and McCarthy pitched well, and they were backed up by sensational fielding. It began be-gan raining in the sixth, and Hogg lost control temporarily, filling the bases with no one out. Two runs were scored on Infield In-field hits. Hulen scored the first run of the season on a walk and steal, and Treadway's drive. Seattle won in the nnith on Fisher's error. With TreadWay on second and one out. Fisher dropped Kelly's drive, and in trying to catch him at first threw wild. Matt Stanley won the game with a well-placed hit in left field that the speedy I.awler could not reach. Score: R. H. E. The Pacific National league opened the season at Prager park with an attcdance of about 2000. Los Ang-eles won ' from Helena by a score of 4 to 3. It was a close and interesting inter-esting gane, in which StrickJt-tt, for Reilly's men, pitched splendid ball, keeping keep-ing the seven hits made off his delivery well scattered. Errors were rather frequent fre-quent on both sidfs. Thompson for Helena Hel-ena allowed eip-ht hits, but most of these came in the first three innings. Spokane and Portland of the Pacific National league inaugurated the 1903 season in this city ith a lourteen-innlng game, which the visitors won by a score of '3 to 2. The day was cold and raw, but the fielding was excellent, each tean bfing credited with only one error. Neither side was able to put a man over the plate until the thirteenth thir-teenth Inning, when Spokane "cored two runs. Portland came up and tied the score.
