The new Immigration law, imposing a head ( tax of $2 on all aliens coming into this . country, i causing trouble for the local Immigration bureau. The Oceanic Steamship company refused point blank to pay the tax, and Commlssion- cr of Immigration North thereupon made a ruling that no alien passengers should be landed from a ship In this port until the tax had been first paid thny the company bringing such aliens. The steamship companies claim that th new law Is In conflict with the regulation reg-ulation of the immigration bureau requiring re-quiring the payment of a deposit on aliens, which they say is virtually paying pay-ing the tax. A test case will probably be made. |
