Show UNIVERSITY GRADUATES HOLD 34TH COMMENCEMENT diplomas were conferred: William Clive Bradford, Charles Worthen Gibbs, Lll-lie Lll-lie Elizabeth Shipp, Joseph Alvln Schoenhals, James William Welsh, George Doney Parkinson. Certificates in the business department depart-ment were received by Horace W. Clark, William J. Flowers and Joseph Home Spencer. FAIR STUDENTS OF ROWLAND HALL GIVE FINE ENTERTAINMENT. The commencement exercises of Rowland Hall were given at the First Congregational, church last evening. One of the special features was the closing concert given by the piano de-' partment under the supervision of Miss Flanders.. The pupils who took part in the programme pro-gramme were the Misses Mary Brack-ett. Brack-ett. Pearl Gleed, Bonnie Miller, Win-nifred Win-nifred Brice, Veta Mayberry. Dorothy Leonard, Helen Long, Bertha West, Alta Goddard, Mabel Robinson, Bella Blyth, Florence Burton, Effle Tong, Ada Thompson, Ella Coltharp. Margaret Marga-ret Clark. Mary Finley. Amy Osborne, Isabel Osborne, Florence Wines, Clara Cabell and Jessie Kenyon. At the close of the programme Bishop Leonard presented Miss Margaret Mar-garet Clark of Wyoming with the gold medal for the best progress in music through the year. Miss Pearl Gleed received the silver medal. JORDAN SCHOOL TO HOLD COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES TONIGHT. County Superintendent of Schools Ashton said this morning that the East Jordan school would hold their commencement com-mencement exercises tonight in their own school building. An elaborate programme will be rendered. ren-dered. The school at Hunter is to be kept running for about two weeks on account ac-count of that length of time being lost during the winter. Virtually all the principals engaged last season have been re-engaged for the coming school term, only a few changes having been made either in teachers or principals. ,. . - Great Audience at Thea-j ter Listens to Excel-; lent Programme by the Students. The thirty-fourth annual commencement commence-ment exercises of the University of Utah were held in the Salt Lake Theater The-ater this morning before a house crowded with the frfends and relatives of the graduates. This morning's programme was op-sned op-sned with a prayer by the Rev. Charles ' SL Perkins, after which Eunice Angelina Ange-lina Holbrook read an essay on "Oral Expression in the Interpretation of Language," representing the college class. "Moral Courage" was the subject of the oration of David Parrish Howells, representing the normal class. After an orchestral selection Lyman Skeen, Jr., delivered an address on 'Practical Education." and Anthon H. Gov. Heber M. Wells gave congratulations congratu-lations and advice to the graduating classes, after which the degrees were conferred and diplomas were presented hy President J. T. Kingsbury. The Rev. J. C. Bickel pronounced the benediction. bene-diction. The degree of bachelor of arts was conferred on Marian Adams. ALL HALLOWS' BOYS HAVE A LIVELY CONTEST FOR FINE GOLD MEDALS. A lively contest In elocution for gold medals took place at the All Hallows college last evening A large number of the friends and relatives of the contestants con-testants were present. The Judges were: C. C. Goodwin, Fred E. 11c-Gurrin 11c-Gurrin and J. J. Harvey. In the senior class the medal went to Hugh Coltharp of Vernal, Utah, for his excellent rendition of "Benedict Arnold." Ar-nold." Honorable distinction was won by Robert Poke of Orleans, Neb.. his selection being "Liberty and Union," Un-ion," and by Julius Schmidt of Sandy, Utah, his selection being "The Baron's Last Bancuet" Among the junior contestants Martin Curran of Herman, Ia carried off the gold medal, with his rendition of "Nolan's "No-lan's Ride." For second place there was a tie between Ross Killery of , Cripple Creek. Colo., who told "How Salvator Won," and Jay Quealey of Kemmerer. Wyo., who rendered that old-time favorite, "Barbara Frietchle." The third in the Junior contest was James Delaney of Butte, -Mont., who rendered the "Seminole's Defiance." All the contestants were complimented compli-mented very highly by Judge Goodwin, Good-win, who made the announcements. L. D. S. TJNIVEESITY - GIVES DIPLOMAS TO TWENTY STUDENTS. The commencement exercises of the Latter-day Baints university were held last night in Earratt halL which was crowded to its "capacity with the friends and patrons of the school. The commencement was theclose of the seventeenth year of the school and the second year of the university. Twenty graduates were given their certificates and diplomas. Of these one, John Henry Evans, received the degree of bachelor of philosophy, nine received normal diplomas, one a scientific and normal course diploma, six scientific and three business course certiScates. President Paul's report showed that there were for the present year, 1261 regular pupils and 50 in kindergarten, a total of 1311 pupils. Of these 900 were enrolled in the high school department, de-partment, and the ( others were in special departments. The programme opened with a chorus by the1 school, "Students of the L. . D. S." by the congregation. Angus M. Cannon then offered the opening prayer, and Mrs. Lizzie Thomas Edwards Ed-wards sang a solo, with a chorus by the school. s President Paul gave his report of the school's work, after which the students stu-dents of the university sang a school song, "The White Rose;" Joseph Schoenhals gave a fine valedictory; Prof. Charles Kent sang "The Parting," Part-ing," with chorus by the school; President Presi-dent Anthon H. Lund presented the diplomas di-plomas to the graduates; Mrs. Lizzie Thomas Edward sang "Could Tou Be True to Eyes of Blue," with chorus by the school; President Joseph F. Smith addressed the graduates; the Tenth ward choir sang "Grant Us Peace. O Lord" (Stephens) and "God of Israel" (Stephens). Elder Joseph E. Taylor pronounced the benediction.
