Show tic. To hope to check the spread of smallpox by disregarding dis-regarding it is as futile as to expect escaping-the bolt of lightning by defying-it. One thing and-one thing only is efficacious: Render the system immune im-mune by vaccination. And some day, when the citizens citi-zens of Salt Lake hare jaid the full penalty in doctor's doc-tor's bills, in detention from business,' in broken hearts that mourn uncomf orted for those who sleep in the narrow house they will learn this, and then the great majority will regard the anti-vaccinationist as the avowed enemy of public health and the general good. , v Change in Mental Attitude Required. During the past few years a school of mental science and psychology that regards the attitude of the individual mind as virtually the sole cause of disease has had a flourishing growth particularly in the West. According to this so-called new thought a man need only hold fast to the conviction that for him disease does not exist to walk unscathed un-scathed in the midst of any pestilence. Or, in brief, the lrianifestationsof disease as shown in physical symptoms are the direct result of the mental attitude atti-tude of the one seemingly affected. The most zealous zeal-ous disciple of this belief may find room for doubt and food for sober thought by a careful study of conditions in Sugar ward. If mental attitude counts for anything the residents of that district should be immune from the deadliest plague that ever spread its wings of darkness and the shadow of the grave upon helpless humanity. Evidence disclosed by the investigations of the health authorities shows that smallpox holds no terrors for these' persons. They simply calmly and without a thought of possible possi-ble danger disregarded the apparent existence of the disease, went ahead with their daily duties, amusements and- religious worship, mingling freely and refusing to believe even that those whose faces were pitted had any such disease as smallpox. For them it did not exist, if their actions are a fair standard, of judgment by which their convictions may be arrired at. But, nevertheless, the germs of that loathsome disease found their bodies excellent places wherein to increase and flourish and today the victims are shut off from the outside world by the fearful yellow flag. The lesson is plain to all who hav6 the mental capacity and will take the time to think Nature's laws operate in total disregard of the individual. The smallpox germ will lodge, develop and produce disease wherever nothing has been done to render it powerless, and it Is a matter of indifference to the germ and to nature whether the victim is an imbecile or a philosopher, whether he U a believer in tranfrabstantiatioa or an agno |
