Show A Solution of the McKay Mystery, The real cause behind the decapitation of Trof. McKay by the Hoard of Education has become en- veloped in. a shroud of mystery too deep for the average Salt Laker to cut, but a complaint just lodged against a prominent and capable Chicago educator may partially lift the veil. From reading "Julius Caesar" the young women teachers who are in the normal, the normal practice and the Yale practice departments of the Chicago normal school got to thinking that head critic William W. Black was a dangerous man to have about, because he does not smile. They came-before the school management man-agement committee Monday to testify to their dislike dis-like for Mr. Black, but when members of the School Board tried to, get definite charges against the man the replies of the teachers were: "He never smiles." "He is unsympathetic." "We feel that he lacks the sympathetic quality of human friendliness." Among .those who testified to this effect were 3Iaud E. Ful-mer, Ful-mer, Isabel Pattison and Mrs. George J. Wagner. jThe school management committee has the case under advisement. It is thought something may happen that will make Mr. Black smile between now and the time when the matter is settled, in which event the charges will have to be withdrawn as unfounded. Mif. Black is an Indiana man and a graduate of the University of Illinois. He is regarded re-garded as a most capable educator. Now Prof. McKay is not a chronic smiler. ne thinks more than he smiles. He believes in economy in school affairs, in making both ends meet. For these reasons rea-sons certain extravagant members of the School board no doubt believe that he "lacks the sympathetic sympa-thetic quality of human friendliness." And it is the possession of a surplus of this "sympathetic quality of human friendliness" and a deficit in the stock of business acumen that started a begging campaign in order to keep the schools open for the full term. |
