Show POOR SAN FRANCISCO. San Francisco is passing through the slough of despond. Working men are charging three times the usual wages and are not performing half labor; the rainy season is approaching and there are still thousands who are houseless; men who have steady employment are still eating the food of charity, while sensitive people are living on half rations rather than accept charity, and the place is filled with thieves and hold-ups. The marvelous feature is that trade is good and the bank clearings are in excess of a year ago. It is said, too, that the working people are buying much more costly wares than ever before, without a thought that the present harvest will not always last. The great pressure is upon those who were once rich or in comfortable circumstances and who are now trying to build and to gather up the raveled ends of their affairs and to make a new beginning. The once proud city is entitled to the commiseration commisera-tion of the world. |
