Pleading for leniency for bis waytvard son, Fred 8, Hawkins, 8. N. Hawkins, the Mayor of New Richmond, Wis., has written Sheriff Grant a letter showing the keenest anguish for the acts of the young man, whom he asserts at times as mentally irresponsible. Hawkins is in the county jail for stealing $20 from an acquaintance. The j two were dining in a local restaurant, I and Hawkins left the building to get a $20 bill, belonging to a friend, changed. He failed to return and was t cantured several days later at Ellens- j burg. He has served one term in the Walla Walla penitentiary for robbery, having been sentenced from Ellens-burg. Ellens-burg. I His father writes that his son 's mind ! was permanently affected by injuries in a tornado in Is'ew Richmond on June 12, 1S99, which destroyed their home and wiped out the rest of the family, beveral times. Mr. Hawkins writes, he sent him to retreats to be cured, but in vain. Mr. Hawkins ssks that physicians examine him and learn if he has again become insane. |
