Show NEWS RECEIVED OF ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1 VICTOEIA, B. C, Oct. 24. Letters i have been received from the Anglo-American Anglo-American Arctic expedition, which left Victoria on May 20 on the schooner Duchess of Bedford, dated Port Hope, on July 25. It had not been expected that the schooner would reach this port before August 15. From there the vessel was to proceed at once to Miltoillet, Prince Albert land, where winter quarters would be established. The letters say that on July 8 the schooner had a narrow escape from being be-ing thrown ashore in Bering: straits during a heavy storm. While at Teller City the sailing master, Parker? and the cook refused duty and only, it is 6tated, when threatened with irons on the revenue reve-nue cutter Thetis, did they return on board, and then only on condition they be replaced at Point Barrow. A good supply of dogs were secured at St. Lawrence" island. Ice is reported heavy this year, but the explorers are hopeful that they can round the Arctic and reach Prince Albert land, where the schooner will be anchored as a depot and a camp will be made ashore. |
