Show " - V . - .- , . . " " v . ' N. " ' . . ' ' . ' S Is Salisbury the Dupe of Smoot? Is Orange J. Salisbury the dupe of the Smoot managers? When the Smoot 'campaign started Mr.- Salisbury,. a Gentile, was selected to preside as chairman of the Smoot State campaign committee. The general .understanding, so far as the public is concerned, has been that Smoot was to reward re-ward Mr. Salisbury with the United States Senatorship for his services. Everybody. recalls the outrageous editorial which was published in the Smoot organ some time ago, and which aroused the indignation of Mormon and Gentile alike, This editorial was an appeal for a religious conflict, and told Mor- ' mons that if the American ticket was elected that the Mormons homes and be- longings would be "confiscated and they would be driven from Utah. Intelligent Mormons as well as Gentiles, have been up in arms over this das- -tardly appeal to ignorance and fanaticism. The responsibility has become too great for Smoot to bear, and now the blame for the editorial has been unloaded on Salisbury. Here is the story that .the Smootites are spreading over Salt Lake: They quote Mr. Steve Love as authority for the story. It is related that Mr. Love got wind that such an editorial was to be published, and he went to Chairman Salisbury and protested against the use of snch tactics. "I am chairman of this campaign committee and I propose to run it as I see fit. That editorial has my indorsement, and it goes." Thus the Smooties have unloaded on their Gentile chairman. He is made to bear all the blame. Is Mr. Salisbury the dupe of Smoot? Smoot politicians are laughing over the trick they have turned. v |
