Show ' ALLSTATE'S RECOK . ' - - . "The, dry farm crop tof Utah thl year 1 will be the greatest in the 'history of the Stat." declared . Yed J.' Leonard; chairman chair-man of .the Board of Public Works, this morning. , "It will fee by far the' best year-we year-we ever had. A farmer who haa 820 acres Of dry farm undercultivatlon near Tooele declares .that hia wheat will go a high as forty bushels to the acre this year, j And this Is accomplished without the us of Irrigation. . ' "There are at least 4.000,000 acres of dry ! farm land - In this State. Every bit of j this land Is ntpreptible to dry farming. and the land In most places Is Quit productive. pro-ductive. Around Camp Floyd there is a tract of land of about 200.000 that would be excellent, for dry farming. Hampsrsd by Law. "Under the present law a person can only take 160 acres or dry land. This somewhat hampers a person from getting all that he ought to receive. The number of acres ought to be Increased, and then there would probably be mors dry farming. farm-ing. It has , passed the experimental stage. Down south of Ncphl there are a number of dry farms that have met with marked success. Here the farmers use mostly Odessa wheat. The country will soon learn to plant Turkish red wheat, which Is a bigger yielder and a' mors hardy plant than the other kinds of what. The people are somewhat skeptical skepti-cal about the wheat now, but in a few years it will be the wheat that will be used fo dry farming. Somt Big- Yields. "gome of the dry farms are now yielding yield-ing from twenty-eight to thirty bushels 'an acre of wheat. That Is what a great number have reported. This Is produced without the nae of water and no other labor than th ploughing in the fall and the sowing, and later the reaping. Should the land only yield from 116 to 130 an acre it would be a big profit for th amount of work expended. "Western' Kansas was made by her dry farming, and Utah Is going to become be-come a larger State through her dry farming. "Another thing that will shortly b Introduced In-troduced more extensively in this State is K after com, which makes a flne forage plant. There Is also a quantity of dry land alfalfa that is being introduced. Th experiment has proceeded slowly, but this year will demonstrate what great things can be expected, and will add an impetus to the industry that It has never known .before." |
