Show ARMED WITH A WHIP HE KEEPS SHERIFF AT BAY, GUELPII. Sept. J. Armed with a horsewhip, Richard Card, farmer of Ouelph township, defied Sheriff Allan and the Canadian Pacific railroad authorities and its employees to put a spade into his land in the construction of the Canadian X'aciflc Railroad Ouelph to Ooderich line, which was surveyed to cross Card's farm. Card having refused the price offered by the railway company, an order of expropriation expro-priation was obtained from the court. An attempt was made to start operations on the farm. Sheriff Allen took assistants out to see that the order of the court was obeyed, but even this did not dismay the farmer. lie drove up and down the road In a buggy and used a heavy whip to keep the men back. That he used the whip with effect Is evidenced by the fact that two of the men received painful cuts.
