Show BIG FIRE ON WATER FRONT AT PORTLAND PORTLAND, Or., Sept. J. With a gale blowing from he east at the rate of V thirty miles an hour, fire yesterday, ' starting about noon, destroyed the dock of the Oregon Railroad & Navigation company and the Pacific Coast Elevator company's warehouse In lower Albina. - The wind carried the flames across the Willamette river, and the dry kilns of the !, Eastern and Western Lumber company, on the West side, were also burned. Previously a Are at St. Johns, a sub- urb Of this city, one and a half miles down the river, below the destroyed docks, bad destroyed the plant of the St. John Lumber company, the Oregon Fir company's mill and the wood yards OT the ' '- Peninsula Wood company. A hundred freight cars on the O. R. A N. tracks In lower Albina caught Are and twenty-five of them were completely de-J de-J stroyed. Including their loads of wheat, lumber and miscellaneous freight The total loss will approximate over $230,000. The amount of insurance Is not known at present, but lt is stated that :.- the insurance will cover a good proportion of the loss. |
