Show WRECK SURVIVOR TELLS OP HORROR James Gunter the Only Seaman of the Hilda to Escape. ST. MALO, France, Nov. 20. James Gunter, the only seaman of the British channel steamer Hilda saved from the wreck of that vessel off this port on Sunday night, says there was no panic on board. Attempts were made to lower the boat, but the rough sea rendered It impossible. Gunter clung tq the fittings fit-tings of the top mast with nine others below him, including the chief mate and three Bretons, who died during the night of exposure. The Hilda struck at 10 o'clock Sunday night. She was going very slowly at the time. Rockets were sent up, but there was no response. Seven minutes later the ship broke amidships and her decks were swept bare with the exception excep-tion of the few survivors who clung to the mast. They were rescued by the steamer Ada at 10 o'clock Sunday morning after having endured twelve hours of agony. |
